Rediscovering the Joy of Blogging
We fell off the blog post wagon for a little while. Other priorities set in and time simply slipped away. Despite the hiatus, we truly love sharing our thoughts here. Noting how long it’s been since our last post, this season—marked by transition—feels like the perfect time to reconnect.
The Beauty and Significance of Autumn
Autumn is a period marked by cooling temperatures, shortening daylight hours, and the vibrant transformation of leaves on deciduous trees. This change in foliage is one of the things I cherish most about this time of year. It’s a crowd favorite, drawing millions of tourists and holding deep cultural significance in countries throughout both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Interestingly, the yellow and orange colors we see in leaves are always present, but usually masked by the abundance of green from chlorophyll. As the sun weakens and days grow shorter, the amount of chlorophyll decreases, revealing those hidden hues. Red and purple leaves owe their colors to sugars and sap trapped within them, which provide the energy plants need to survive.
The Meaning of Autumn
The word “autumn” comes from the ancient Etruscan word autu, meaning “passing of the year.” This resonates, as the fall season lasts only ten days shy of the new year. Many of us share the wish that autumn could last forever, savoring its fleeting beauty and the sense of renewal it brings.
Seasonal Traditions and Travel
During fall, many birds prepare for their winter migration, covering impressive distances. It is also a time when schools let out for a week, and families often take trips. Most travelers, especially Americans, opt for domestic destinations. Cities like Orlando, Boston, and Seattle are among the top choices, with Denver, Las Vegas, and New York City also proving popular during this season.
Halloween: Creativity and Community
Halloween stands out as a favorite holiday, renowned for its creativity. The festivities begin with pumpkin carving and continue with imaginative props—both store-bought and handmade—displayed around homes, yards, roofs, and balconies. Each Halloween installation tells a unique story, sparks curiosity, and often motivates us to become even more creative. Before trick-or-treaters arrive, I make sure to add new decorations to my standing decor, dress up in a character that matches my overall theme, and greet visitors with a kettle full of candy.
Embracing the Outdoors
One challenge of this season is the shorter days and reduced sunlight, which can negatively affect our moods. However, making time for outdoor activities is essential. Spending time outside helps soak up Vitamin D and allows us to appreciate the spectacular display Mother Nature offers. Being mindful of and prioritizing time outdoors will lead to a more enjoyable fall season for you and those around you.
Conclusion
So, embrace this time of year and the wonder it brings. Enjoy all that autumn has to offer.
